Freedom Begins at Home
As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day this week, I’ve been thinking about where freedom truly begins.
It begins long before the parades.
Long before the fireworks.
Long before we gather around picnic tables with family and friends.
It begins at home.
Home is where children first learn kindness.
It is where they learn honesty because someone lives it in front of them.
It is where they discover that serving others is not a burden but a privilege.
The values that strengthen a nation are usually not taught from a podium.
They are taught around a dinner table.
They are learned while helping wash dishes.
By caring for grandparents.
By welcoming neighbors.
By praying together.
By forgiving one another after disagreements.
By keeping our promises even when no one is watching.
The strongest communities are built from strong homes.
And strong homes are built one ordinary day at a time.
Our country has certainly faced difficult seasons throughout its history, and every generation has wondered what the future would hold. Yet families have continued to gather around tables, share meals, plant gardens, celebrate birthdays, comfort one another through loss, and quietly teach the next generation what truly matters.
Those ordinary moments may not make the history books.
But they shape the hearts of the people who eventually do.
This week at Rosemary Thyme, we’ll be celebrating an old-fashioned Fourth of July with recipes, stories, history, and simple traditions that remind us why home is still one of God’s greatest gifts.
May we never take for granted the blessing of living in freedom.
And may we always remember that one of the best ways we can honor that freedom is by building homes filled with love, gratitude, faith, and peace.
