๐ŸŒฟ RosemaryThyme Kitchen Tips | How to Choose Fish & Seafood ๐ŸŸ

I usually reach for wild Alaskan cod because I love its mild flavor and those big, tender flakes. But Iโ€™ve wondered what wild-caught and farm-raised really tell us about the fish weโ€™re buying. And once you get to the tuna aisle, thereโ€™s a whole other set of labels to sort through!

So I put together a little guide you can save for your next grocery trip. It covers everything from mild white fish and sweet scallops to bolder choices like sardines, plus which fillets to check for little pin bones.

๐ŸŸ If you like a mild fish, cod, haddock, and pollock are good places to start. If youโ€™re in the mood for shellfish, scallops are mild, slightly sweet, and have no bones.

๐ŸŒฟ Wild-caught and farm-raised can both be nutritious. Wild fish are harvested from natural waters, while farm-raised fish are raised in ponds, tanks, or pens. The amount of omega-3s varies with the species and what the fish eats. Both wild and farm-raised salmon can give you a good serving of omega-3s.

๐Ÿฅซ Read the full name on the tuna label. The FDA and EPA list canned light tuna, which includes skipjack, among their lower-mercury Best Choices. Canned white tuna (albacore), fresh albacore, and yellowfin are Good Choices. Bigeye tuna is in the highest-mercury group. Those categories are especially helpful for anyone who might become pregnant, is pregnant or breastfeeding, and for children ages 1โ€“11.

๐Ÿด My quick fillet tip. Even a fillet labeled boneless can have a stray pin bone. Run your fingertips over the flesh before cooking and pull out any you feel with clean fish tweezers.

๐Ÿ“Œ Save the illustrated guide for your next trip to the seafood counter. Whatโ€™s your favorite fish or seafood to cook at home?

Guide To Selecting Beef Roasts

๐Ÿฅฉ๐ŸŒฟ A RosemaryThyme Guide to Selecting Beef Roasts

Have you ever stood in front of the meat case wondering which roast to choose?

Eye of round can be very lean and sometimes dry, while a chuck roast can be wonderfully tender but a little fattier than you prefer. Rump roast, top sirloin, chuck armโ€”each cut has its own strengths and responds best to a different cooking method.

I created this handy RosemaryThyme guide to explain:

๐ŸŒฟ The differences between USDA Prime, Choice and Select
๐ŸŒฟ Which roasts are leanest
๐ŸŒฟ Which cuts become fall-apart tender
๐ŸŒฟ The best choices for oven roasting, slow cooking and slicing
๐ŸŒฟ What to look for when comparing marbling

For many families, USDA Choice offers a wonderful balance of quality, flavor and value. A top sirloin roast is a lovely moderately lean choice, while a rump roast provides rich beef flavor without as much fat as a traditional chuck roast.

Save this guide for your next trip to the grocery storeโ€”and choose the roast that best suits the meal you want to prepare. โค๏ธ
