Keeping Nuts & Seeds Fresh

I learned this kitchen lesson after throwing away one too many bags of walnuts! Once opened, I had been keeping them on the pantry shelf, not realizing how much longer they could stay fresh in the refrigerator or freezer.

And I use walnuts for much more than baking—sprinkled over salads, tossed into recipes, or added for a little crunch. They’re too useful—and too expensive—to let go to waste! 💛

Nuts and seeds contain natural oils that can turn rancid over time. Cool temperatures and airtight storage help protect that wonderful flavor.

🌿 A few simple habits can make a difference:

• Keep a small portion in the refrigerator for everyday cooking.
• Freeze the extra in airtight containers or freezer bags, pressing out excess air.
• Label each portion with the name and date.
• Store nuts whole when practical, and chop as needed.
• Follow the package directions, especially for roasted or seasoned varieties.

This applies to more than walnuts! Pecans, almonds, cashews, pistachios, peanuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds can all benefit from thoughtful storage.

📌 Save the storage guide for a handy reference. The times are approximate freshness guidelines, and putting an older bag in the freezer won’t make it fresh again.

If nuts or seeds develop an off or paint-like smell, mold, or pantry pests, discard them. Toasting won’t rescue rancid nuts.

A little care today means less waste tomorrow—and more delicious meals around the table. 🏡💛

Do you keep your nuts and seeds in the pantry, refrigerator, or freezer?
