🌿 Sunday Reflection
A Little Pause, a Little Prayer
Even at my age, I am still a work in progress—still learning, still growing, and still asking God to help me become a little wiser along the way.
One thing I continue to work on is giving myself a moment before I respond or make a decision when my emotions are running high.
Our emotions are a beautiful part of being human. They allow us to love deeply, feel compassion, find joy, and recognize when something hurts. I wouldn’t want to lose that tenderness. But I am learning that I can honor what I feel without allowing that feeling to make every decision.
Sometimes hurt leads me to assume something that may not be true. Worry can make a decision feel more urgent than it is. Even excitement can have me saying yes before I have thought things through.
James 1:19 reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
I need that reminder. There have been times when a little more listening, a little less speaking, and a moment of prayer would have helped me respond with greater care.
So here is a simple word I am keeping close: PAUSE.
🌿 P — Pause and pray.
Take a breath. “Lord, help me see this clearly.”
🌿 A — Acknowledge the feeling.
Am I hurt, worried, angry, or excited? I can be honest about my feelings without criticizing myself for having them.
🌿 U — Understand the facts.
What do I actually know? What might I be assuming? Is there something I need to ask or understand before deciding?
🌿 S — See beyond this moment.
Will this choice reflect my faith and values? How might my words or actions affect someone else—and how might I feel about them tomorrow?
🌿 E — Elect a thoughtful response.
Choose my next step with care. If the decision can wait, I can give myself more time.
I won’t always remember to do this perfectly. I know myself well enough to know that! But I can keep practicing, apologize when I need to, and ask God to help me try again.
Perhaps you have found yourself learning this lesson, too.
This week, when a feeling rises and an answer seems ready to tumble out, I hope to remember:
A little pause. A little prayer. Then a thoughtful next step.
🙏 Lord, thank You for the gift of feeling deeply. Help me listen patiently, see clearly, and choose wisely. When I am quick to react, remind me to pause and make room for Your guidance. Help my words and decisions reflect Your love. Amen.
With love,
Helene 😊
