Measure Twice-Cut Once

Some wisdom follows you from the workshop into the kitchen, and even into the way you speak.

My father used to say, Measure twice, cut once.

He meant it in construction, of course — take care before making the cut, because mistakes can be harder to undo than they are to prevent.

But I’ve come to think that simple advice reaches much further.

It applies in the kitchen. Taste before salting.

It applies in relationships. Think before speaking.

And sometimes it applies even before pressing send.

There is quiet wisdom in slowing down enough to be thoughtful.

Perhaps much of peace is found there.

Measure twice, cut once.

Still good advice for almost everything.
