The Strength of Gentleness

🙏Sunday Reflection: The Strength of Gentleness

Every family has a story.

Some are filled with laughter.
Some carry old hurts.
Most are a little of both.

As we grow older, we begin to realize that the perfect family exists only in our memories and our hopes. Real families are made up of imperfect people trying, failing, forgiving, misunderstanding, and sometimes finding their way back to one another.

One of my favorite saints, Saint Francis de Sales, wrote these words:

“Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.”

I’ve thought about those words often over the years.

Gentleness isn’t pretending everything is fine.

It isn’t ignoring hurt.

It isn’t allowing ourselves to be mistreated.

Sometimes gentleness is simply choosing not to let life’s disappointments harden our hearts.

It is setting healthy boundaries without losing compassion.

It is continuing to pray for someone we cannot change.

It is showing up for an aging parent.

It is loving the family who is present while quietly grieving the relationships that never became what we hoped.

The older I become, the more I treasure peace.

Not because my life has been free of conflict…

…but because I know how precious peace really is.

Perhaps that’s why I love creating a welcoming table, planting herbs in the garden, watching the koi glide through the pond, or sharing simple recipes with all of you.

These little things remind me that even in a complicated world, we can still choose kindness.

We can still choose gentleness.

And sometimes, that quiet gentleness is the greatest strength of all.

As you gather with those you love this week—or perhaps simply sit quietly with a cup of coffee—I hope you’ll remember that you don’t have to have a perfect family to build a peaceful home.

May God give us wisdom where relationships are complicated, courage where boundaries are needed, and gentle hearts that remain open to love.

Have a peaceful and blessed Sunday.
